Personal Sites
(Updated 2002/06/22) I confess, there are some journals here that I haven't visited in some time, so my descriptions of them are probably woefully outdated. I liked them enough when I was reading them to keep them on the list, though.
Aiyah.net - Winnie
I can't even say the name of this site without cracking up. If you're Chinese or understand the language or have Chinese-speaking friends, you'll know what it means. Opinionated, sometimes abrasive, always funny-as-hell and definitely no Susie Wong.
Are You Happy NOW? - Patrick Cleary
This is Patrick's latest incarnation of his journal, following on the heels of Iteration and Inside. From the suburban Boston, MA, USA area, he works for an evil consulting company for pay but his true love is writing, and examples of his stories and mini-scripts are sometimes featured in his entries. I love his writing - alternately hilarious and touching, with a startling degree of honesty. He's gone through some (mostly positive) changes recently, which accounts for the tongue-in-cheek title.
Baker Street - Michael Hardy
Michael is from the Washington, D.C., USA area. He has a quiet, mature style; he doesn't tell quite all, but his journal is an engaging read nonetheless.
Bobofett - Dana
Coming at you from New Haven, CT, USA. Read all about Dana's adventures as an administrative assistant at The Death Star (a research lab at the unnamed Educational Monolith), her archnemesis, BS, and her incredible quest to get Big Head Todd & the Monsters to play at her 30th birthday party. Definitely the wackiest writer of the bunch and a helluva lot of fun to read.
Chuck'stake - Chuck Atkins
Chuck has been through some very tough times in his life - alcoholism, drug abuse, run-ins with the law. Now clean and sober, a husband and father, he writes honestly about past and present, with a wry sense of humour.
Darn Tootin' - Rob Rummel-Hudson
Also from New Haven, CT, USA, Rob (formerly of Book of Rob) is a self-confessed smart-ass and refers to his readers as "my slobbering minions," but trust me, he's a pretty cool guy. He and his wife Julie celebrated the birth of their first baby, Schuyler (a girl in case you don't know), in December 1999. He can do the serious self-reflection thing but is never pretentious, having the ability to find humour in just about any situation.
Digital Ink - Katie
Katie is a recent high school graduate from Lebanon, IL, USA, and writes with wit and a good dose of sarcasm. She is a history buff, an avid reader, a fan of trivia, a self-confessed loner, and isn't afraid to question established beliefs.
Draw The Girl - Eliza
Earthmovers and Sandcastles - Carrie
Carrie is a lovely red-haired (which explains her domain name) librarian. With sometimes surprising frankness, but not without humour, her journal chronicled the struggles and heartache she and her husband Eric went through in trying to conceive a child. Their efforts paid off in June 2001, when their son Sam was born.
I'd Rather Eat Glass - Sasha
Residing in Los Angeles, CA, USA, Sasha found the love of her life over the internet (I love a success story against the odds). Sometimes dark and moody but always compelling.
Journal Of A Writing Man - John Bailey
John hails from somewhere in rural England (my apologies for the vagueness). His entries include wonderfully descriptive slices of his life, poems, and lovely photographs of the landscape, his garden, and sometimes his cats. He's someone I think I'd really like if I ever meet him in person.
Letters To My Editor - Skipper Chong Warson
Skipper is an "Editorial Interactive Developer/Illustrator" (a direct quote from his résumé, and I'm still not sure what it means) for the online pharmacy Rx.com. He is also a student at Austin (Texas, USA) Community College. His "letters" are notes to himself, but definitely not the stick-on-your-fridge kind - they are extremely well-thought out and expressed.
Nova Notes - Al Schroeder
From Nashville, TN, USA, Al writes movingly about his family, and his daily entries showcase his talent for drawing and passion for science-fiction and fantasy. I started reading Al's journal just before the recent death of his oldest son, Jamie, in late November 1999. His heartache is evident but his love and strength of character come through even more strongly.
Parenthesis - Lynda
Lynda writes insightfully and eloquently about her life and inner turmoils, and switches easily to scathing-yet-funny commentary when describing her not-so-wonderful adventures working for a "Sortaboss." We can all relate.
Plaintive Wail - Stee
A screenwriter and actor from Los Angeles, CA, USA, Stee is wickedly funny one moment (his "look at the trades" entries are hilarious) and surprisingly heartfelt the next. He has a unique perspective on life and all things Hollywood. UPDATE (2002/06/22) - Stee's inexplicably fallen off the face of the earth, having not updated since last fall. Hoping he makes a reappearance.
Planning a Sky - Melissa
When I read Melissa, I get the sense that she has a truly good soul. She writes in a highly personal style, and as a reader, you almost feel as if you know her. She's had some heartbreaking experiences but manages to pick herself up again, and you can't help but root for her. Her life's been pretty sweet lately; she recently married a wonderful man, and she sounds happier than she's ever been.
Rambles - Mike Lee
Mike is a Web developer from New York, now transplanted to San Francisco, CA, USA. Rambles is less a journal of his life than a collection of well-written weekly musings about whatever comes to his mind, but still has enough personal connection to keep you coming back for more.
These Go To 11! - Scott Kramer
Home of Scott Kramer, a Web developer from Atlanta, GA, USA. Scott (formerly of Chinese Torture) seems like a no-nonsense kind of guy. He has a biting, sarcastic sense of humour which pervades every area of his site (sometimes even the code - check it out).
